TOURNAMENT NEWS According to this Spanish article, JC is planning on competing in Halle before going on to Wimbledon. He will first have some x-rays done to check the status of his new injury in the left thigh (actually its an old reoccuring injury) and then start training again on Monday. JC says he's looking forward to playing on grass since he's had fairly good results on it.

Seems like instead of taking a break to restore his health like many of us would like him to do, JC is trying to get as much match play in as possible. Perhaps he isn't use to sitting on the sidelines and is eager to get back to playing tennis... Whatever it is though, hope it's for the best. ^^

NON-TENNIS NEWS JC and the 2003 Spanish Armada (Moyá, López, Corretja, Arrese) are featured on a special edition of stamps honoring Spanish athletes.

RG UPDATES More news on the confirmation.

[EDIT]This is the translation of the article that Marie posted below. Thanks Ana for fosting this to the forum ^^[/EDIT]
Ferrero defends his title

The Spaniard, reigning champion of the tournament, has assured that the will play tomorrow, Tuesday, in Roland Garros despite his physical problems. "I'm not at 100% but I'm going to play. I still have pain, but I'm going to try," said Ferrero after his practice session on the courts of Paris.

Paris, May 24- The player had said on Sunday that there was a 60% chance that he would not defend his title at Roland Garros, but he preferred to wait until today to make a final decision. The truth is that Ferrero has only played 7 matches on clay this season, and he wasn't able to practice between May 10 and 17, which means he arrives very green at his favorite tournament.

Ferrero will debut against a very difficult opponent, the German Tommy Haas, who despite being a better player on hard court, could send the Valencian home at the start if he isn't careful and doesn't make use of his experience. It must be very difficult for Ferrero to arrive like this in Paris, after his victory here last year.

Ferrero has not played again since April 21, when he lost in the first round at Montecarlo against Alex Corretja. The injury in the ribs, caused May 7 has not allowed him to. He missed the TMS Hamburg because of it and previously the TMS Rome, though this one was by choice to regain his confidence and game. It has been a dramatic year when it comes to injuries and mishaps, beginning with an injury in the abductor in the left leg, though despite it he was able to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open. Later chickenpox caused him to miss the American spring hardcourt season, and then that unfortunate fall during one of his practice sessions that caused the wrist and rib injury.

"I'm not at 100%, but I will go out and play," commented Ferrero after his last practice session that lasted just 40 minutes, on court 17, the same where two years ago he also decided to compete with an injury in his right ankle. Later came the final with Albert Costa. The Spaniard will play the 4th match on Central court, just like he had requested of the organization. This court opens at 11:00 Spanish time. "We'll see how I am, because the pain continues," said the Valencian who today looked much better and was hitting with more confidence. Just at the end, when he practiced serve, did the pain appear again. "Today he's hit much better," said Antonio Martínez Cascales, his coach, "we hope that with the treatment from the doctor Angel Ruíz Cotorro he'll go on court tomorrow feeling better and able to serve. But he'll do it knowing that he has this inconvenience." Cascales added that his pupil had been hitting the ball well from below and that he'd "do what he could," with his state. "We've been considering the decision since last Thursday and what's clear is that if we were in Spain he probably wouldn't play, but since we're here, it's to play."

Ferrero had an ultrasound that confirmed his injury has scarred. He is till wearing a bandage for prevention and in hopes that the pain will reduce little by little. "We'll see how he feels tomorrow and if he's lucky and wins, we'll have 48 hours to recover. I don't know if the situation is better or worse than two years ago," continued Cascales, referring to the ankle injury, "but I don't like it." The doctor, Angel Ruíz Cotorro, was also positive. "The injury is in the process of scarring and there are no bruises around it, but he has pain when he breathes, runs or moves. We are in the usual process of recovery (3 weeks)," he said. Ferrero is being treated with mesotheraphy and physiotherapy to reduce the inflammation in the area. Tomorrow he will warm up 10 or 15 minutes before the match, but the doctor is confident that the treatment will have effect. "It bothers him especially when he hits the forehand on the rush and when he serves. Psychologically there are two aspects, the negative- the worrying about the injury, and the positive- the desire to compete. Juan Carlos is a natural winner and that's why he's going out to play tomorrow. If later he has to retire, it will be because he can't."

Ferrero's decision

After a practice session Monday, defending champion Juan Carlos Ferrero planned to play in the French Open despite a rib injury, Spanish tennis federation spokesman Pedro Hernandez said.

Ferrero, scheduled to play his first-round match Tuesday against Tommy Haas, said Sunday there was a 60 percent chance he would withdraw.

Tournament spokesman Christophe Proust said organizers hadn’t heard from Ferrero on Monday, and they assumed he was waiting until Tuesday to make his final decision.

Ferrero bruised his right ribs in a fall May 8 while practicing in Spain.

...
Meanwhile, Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain was out practicing on court 18, trying to decide if he was healthy enough to defend his title here. Ferrero bruised a rib in a fall during practice on May 7 and was forced to withdraw from two tournaments. But after his training session (and a pain-killing injection), he told Spanish reporters that he intends to play his first-round match against Tommy Haas on Tuesday.

...
On Monday, it was learned Ferrero will take the court for Tuesday's first-round match with Tommy Haas. Henin-Hardenne, the other defending champion, scratched out an ugly 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sandrine Testud of France.

"Yes, he plays. It was obvious he would wait for the last minute to make a final decision about pulling out, given the importance of the tournament," ATP spokesman Nicola Arzani told Reuters. Ferrero fell on his right wrist and ribs practicing in Valencia two days before the Hamburg tournament began.

RG UPDATE Turns out there is a possibility JC might NOT participate in RG this year. He's planning to first travel to Paris and then decide once he's there since the pain in the ribs is still present and hindering his breathing.

Antonio Martinez Cascales: "He knows that he is not in the condition to compete but he wants to. He's training at about 60% and 20% of his usual intensity. Sometimes it's bad and sometimes he's alright."

ARTICLE French Open champions shrouded in shadows of doubt

Twelve months after blazing to French Open glory, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Justine Henin-Hardenne begin the defence of their singles titles next week knowing they are prime suspects for shock opening round defeats.

Gritty Spaniard Ferrero and tough Belgian Henin-Hardenne have endured a nightmare scenario in their build-up to the second Grand Slam of the season.

Ferrero, usually so supreme on clay, hasn't played since losing in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters, where he was defending champion, four weeks ago and has skipped events in Barcelona, Rome and Hamburg as he battles to recover from a wrist injury.

That setback followed his withdrawal from the Indian Wells and Miami Masters because of chicken pox.

To add insult to his injuries, Ferrero also lost his grip on the Estoril title where he laid bare his frustrations.

"I felt uncomfortable on the court," said Ferrero after his 6-2, 6-1 capitulation in the semi-finals to countryman Fernando Verdasco.

"It was one of the worst days Ive had in a long time."

Ferrero's lack of firepower will provide world number one and Wimbledon and Australian Open champion Roger Federer with his best opportunity yet to win here.

NON-TENNIS NEWS

Just very briefly, JC is participating in the 'city marketing' plan of his hometown of Villena (industrial expansion etc). One project that he and his coach Antonio Martinez Cascales are supporting is the construction of an 18 hole golf course near his academy that will be completed in a year and also a hotel that will share the course.

JC is seen here in a press conference along with the mayor of Villena.

PHOTOS and CM Even more pictures for the 'Smash Court Tennis' presentation. And a video for the TV Spot JC filmed.

The CM is a must see. Ana (banana) wrote a description of it on the forum but basically it starts off on a battle field but instead of soldiers with guns it's tennis players dressed in black swinging their racquets and firing tennis balls. Then JC comes out wearing his white kit and he eliminates everyone on the field. A voice then says, "Every point is a battle." Definitely check it out for yourselves. ^^

JC's taste in games

Ferrero surprised everyone by showing that he's a great console player. Although he confessed that his first console was the PSOne, from the first one to the present Playstation 2, he has enjoyed all of them. Sports games are his favourite: Formulates One 2003, MotoGP 3, all the games of tennis, the Pro Evolution Soccer 3.... It is clear that this boy was born for sports. In addition, he did confess his trick for playing (video games) but still keeping his girlfriend: it is to not play when he is with her. That simple. Good advice!

Much thanks to Ana for the new picture ^^

ARTICLE Ferrero: "Training Hard and My Expectations are High"

RECOVERED. The Valencian has gotten past his physical problems.

The tennis player Juan Carlos Ferrero, current champion of Roland Garros, has assured that after overcoming the setbacks of season, starting with the chicken pox, trains very hard in the last days. The reason why is that his expectations in the Parisian tournament are the highest, in spite of his lack of match play.

The Valencian player due to different physical problems that have surfaced in this beginning of season has only been able to participate in three (clay) tournaments and has only won five matches on clay.

"I've had a lot of problems, especially because the chickenpox which left me very weak, but now I am training very hard. On clay I have played very little and the only tournament I have left is Roland Garros and I'm going to try to do my very best," affirmed the tennis player, that has reached, at least the semifinals, in the last four editions of this Grand Slam.

Wants to win in Paris

Once overcoming his physical problems, the tennis player of Ontinyent has assured that in Paris his expectations "are the highest, because I've always done well. Having played only 4 matches on clay is a handicap, but I hope to get past that with my experience and to get my rhythym back in the first three or four matches," he explained.

For the defending champion of the tournament, in this new year, "there are no clear favorites, because all the participants are motivated. The Spanish are always the big favorites, because we've won the last two times. Also there are the Argentines who play with a lot of drive, Kuerten or Federer, who just won the last Masters Series."

Ferrero wants to deal positively with his problems at this moment in the season and he has assured that it will help him "be fresher to face the rest of the calander season, since last year I played too many matches."

ARTICLE Smash Court Tennis 2 is presented

On the terrace of the Círculo de Bellas Artes building and along with Juan Carlos Ferrero and Manolo Santana...

Sony called the press in last Friday the 15 to present their new tennis game from Namco for PlayStation2: Smash Court Tennis 2. The location chosen was not very common, the 6th floor of the terrace of the Círculo de Bellas Artes building.

Javier Reyero presented along with Juan Carlos Ferrero. In the first part of the event, they showed the television ad, clearly based on movies like Saving Private Ryan. Ferrero explained how the clip was filmed and the fun time they had doing it.

Later Manolo Santana, who was also there, went up on stage with Ferrero to demonstrate the game with a match between the two of them. It was a duel between the two stars of Spanish tennis from different times. Ferrero, who moments before had admitted his love for video games, didn't let Manolo take control of the game and finished it off in the first two sets.

After this short presentation, came a press conference where the sporting press hounded the tennis player with questions about his physical condition, and his plans for playing Roland Garros and defending his crown at the Madrid Masters Series.

Among the questions there was some reference to the world of video games and Juan Carlos admitted that his Playstation2 is a good companion to him on his trips, but without letting it take time away from his girlfriend.

'Smash Court Tennis 2' will be out May 26th.

INTERVIEW A short interview with JC concerning his injuries and RG. Some of interview can be viewed in the video below. This is just a rough translation. Hopefully one of our Spanish speaking staff members can do a proper one later. ^^

"In Paris I Will Repeat the Triumph of Last Year"

The French tournament approaches and the Ontinyent player continues without fully recovering from his physical ailments. Nevertheless, he is the champion and he trusts that he will defend his title successfully

- How are your injuries?

Right now the injuries to my right wrist and the blow to the ribs that I received when I fell last Saturday during a training have healed enough. I am reaching normality.

- Will they be well in time for Roland Garros?

I think so. Starting Monday I will train as usual. I have requested that the the officials let me begin (my first match) on Tuesday in Roland Garros so that I'll have an extra day. It's a race against the clock, because when it seems that I have recovered there is a new injury that comes about. Nevertheless, I am used to it. It's normal for players to always undergo some type of pain. I hope to be well in Paris, in opposite case I will be reconciled to which there is. (?)

- What is your goal for Roland Garros?

Highest. I want to repeat my triumph of last year and I don't think about lowering that goal, although I know that Roland Garros is close and that I'm racing against the clock.

- This year you had the misfortune of many injuries, do you worry you'll undergo another mishap?

I hope no. During those time when I was on the verge of recovering from my ailments, always something new occured that prevented it. Chicken pox, injury to the wrist, the ribs... The worse thing is the problem in the ribs, that is most painful. But I must push through the pain and continue training.

PHOTO With JC out of action no new photos but here's a semi new one from the Valencia Open. There's a lower resolution, B&W version already posted on JCFO ^^

A big thanks to our lovely JCFO staffer Ana (Banana) for translating the articles and posting them on the forum. Link at the bottom.

ARITCLE A more detailed article regarding JC's two injuries (rib and wrist). As reported before, JC injured his wrist Friday while trying to brace himself from a fall. But in addition to injuring his wrist he also nailed his elbow into his ribs in the process. This injury prevents him from breathing normally and now he's taking antiinflammatories to treat the pain.

Antonio Martinez Cascales: "We are not optimistic but we are sure that we will go to Roland Garros although I do not know what form he will be in."

FACING A FINE The ATP wanted JC to travel to Hamburg so that the tournament doctors could confirm his injury. JC then proposed to pay for two ATP doctors to come to Villena. There was no precedent for this sort of proposal so it was rejected and since JC did not make it to Hamburg he was fined.

NEWS
Not tennis related- JC is an uncle! Monday his elder sister Ana gave birth to a baby girl, Marta. Congratulations!

Trainer Antonio Martinez Cascales: "Today he (JC) has had the first joy of the year because his sister Ana has been mother of a girl."

Back to tennis- JC's plans for returning to RG are in doubt. Seems like his wrist isn't the only injury. JC's also suffering from soreness in the ribs. More tests will be run at the end of the week to determine if he can start training. It's really a race against the clock since they say that JC will need a minimum of five days to train to be ready but they're not sure if his wrist will be healed in time.

ARTICLE Top stars sign up for China Open
Mon, 10 May 2004

Some of the world's top tennis stars will make a beeline for Beijing in September to contest the inaugural China Open, which organisers on Monday vowed to make the premier tennis event in Asia.

Top-10 ranked players like Spain's Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero will be joined by German Rainer Schuettler and Argentinian David Nalbandian for the September 10-26 event, tournament director Lincoln Venancio said.

"The clear objectives of the China Open are to develop it into one of the world's top five tennis tournaments, to make it Asia's premier annual sports event and to ensure it is a great asset to China's preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games," Venancio told journalists.

Also committed to play are former number one Marat Safin and Thai star Paradorn Srichaphan.

And in a coup for organisers, Venancio said China Central Television (CCTV) would broadcast seven hours a day of live tennis throughout the tournament on its exclusive sports channel to up to 700 million potential Chinese viewers.

Details of the deal were not announced, but CCTV said it expected it to be the largest domestic television audience for any tennis event in history.

Venancio said that sales of television advertisments would be jointly handled by the tournament's marketing wing and the Chinese broadcaster.

Eurosport will also broadcast tournament matches to Europe.

"I'm very excited about coming to play at the China Open," said Ferrero, the French Open champion. "I'm sure it will become a very significant tournament and I would like very much to be the first person in history to win it.

"I'm sure the atmosphere will be electrifying and I look forward to playing my best tennis for the people of China."

The women's draw will be announced in coming weeks.

The China Open, part of the ATP tour, will be played on hardcourt at the Beijing Tennis Centre, which is still under construction.

QUOTE Carlos Moya, quoted in Tennis X, pumping up the Spanish Armada. They're definitely a force to be reckoned with on all surfaces now *proud*

Carlos Moya says don't pick a fight with the Spanish Armada, they'll kick your ass on any surface:

"I think we prove that we can do well everywhere. My example or (Juan Carlos) Ferrero's or (Alex) Corretja's, you know, all of us have won a big title on hardcourts, even indoor.

Ferrero has been No. 1 not only having the claycourt points, but final in US Open, final in a Masters.
So now (Rafael) Nadal is coming and (Fernando) Verdasco, Feliciano (Lopez), they all play maybe even better on hardcourt than on clay. I think you have to adapt these days. Spain, we're doing well in that fact."

COMMENTARY Another mention of JC in Jon Wertheim's Tennis Mailbag. Would be wonderful if one of JC's Chinese fans could send in a scan of this ad. Much thanks to Maly for sending in this bit of news ^^

"Last week the Washington Post ran a column declaring tennis "deader than dead." Before administering last rites, we might do well to consider the fate of tennis in the country with the world's largest population and fastest-growing economy. I had the good fortune of spending a few days in Beijing last week. I was walking past a store on one of the main drags when I saw a poster of a handsome, faintly familiar-looking guy in a blue crew-neck sweater. I looked closely and realized it was Juan Carlos Ferrero. Just last week we discussed JCF's lack of profile in the U.S., a guy who could walk down Broadway in tennis whites and go largely unaccosted. But in China they sell posters of him posing in J. Crewesque street clothes, no racket in sight."

ARTICLE Incase you missed it, here's a really nice article outlining JC's 2003 glory in Roland Garros and his struggles on clay this year. It ends on an uplifting note:

"Today, a few weeks away from his return to Roland Garros, Juan Carlos' grip on the Musketeer's Cup seems less than tight. Nevertheless, he still has time to recover his self-confidence and get himself in shape before be begins his bid to recapture last year's glory. Based on last year's performances, he will be one of the favourites whatever happens between now and then."
